God Bless America

The Times newspaper has been inviting their readers to suggest ideas for British sign-offs to political speeches in response to the ubiquitous “God Bless America”.

Here’s a few the paper liked:

“Put the kettle on.”

“Goodness, is that the time?”

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a train to catch.”

“Well don’t just stand there. Haven’t you got homes to go to?”

We like the quirkiness of above but know that if you want your speech to create a good result you need a powerful ending. You achieve that by reminding your audience of what your key message was and what’s the benefit to them.

The late actor Sir Peter Ustinov said: “Speeches should have powerful openings and strong endings and as little as possible in between.”
